1998 FC Santa Barbara Board Minutes

November 5, 1998

The meeting was called to order by Blair Spaulding at 7:45 p.m. at the McKinnon’s home. Present Dan Ribbens, Blair Spaulding, Bill McKinnon, Jeff Ino, Jim Blascovich, Mario Ramirez, Kim McInturff, Andrew Ziemer; absent Nelson Trichler, Ron Ely, Judy Hug, Fred Guillermo, Brynn Crowe, Brian Hersh, Carolyn Binkley, Rhonda Lee, Karen Ribbens.

STATE CUP REGISTRATION DEADLINE for U10 - U13 TEAMS is NOVEMBER 15:

This is the deadline for getting your State Cup (either "open" or "national") entry in to the CYSA South State Office. Your entry form is in the back of your CYSA-South Team Kit. We encourage all teams to enter either the State Cup "open" tournament (which is random draw) or the State Cup "national" tournament (which is a seeded tournament). If you have any questions please contact either Dan or Karen Ribbens (964-4843).

U14-U18 teams have until January 15 to register.

Andrew Ziemer who runs Ziemer Brothers’ Soccer Camps was introduced by Dan Ribbens who asked Andrew to come down and discuss with us how we might work together to further the development of youth soccer in this area in general and FCSB’s program of competitive soccer in particular. Dan first met Andrew Ziemer about a year and a half ago when Dan’s entire team spent a week at one of the Ziemer brothers camps just prior to Dan taking that team to Europe. Dan and his players were impressed with what they learned at the camp. Since then Dan and Andrew have been talking periodically. Last summer, the Ziemer brothers put on a one week youth camp at UCSB. During 1998 they are planning to put on two one week camps. They like the UCSB facilities and the overall soccer atmosphere in this area.

Andrew Ziemer played professionally in Holland and developed many contacts around the world which he uses to help put on his soccer camps. One of these is Franz Hoek of Ajax who comes over for two weeks each year as part of the Ziemer Brothers’ Soccer Camps program. Currently Andrew Ziemer runs his camps for 20 weeks during the year.

Andrew Ziemer simply gushes over with ideas about how we might work together to promote and put on local camps, develop an FCSB curriculum for what our players should be learning at each age level, develop training programs for our coaches, improve and integrate our relationships with the local recreational leagues, etc. He encouraged us to develop a timeline for 1999 of what we wanted to see occur (and when) in our FCSB development and training program for players and coaches. If we can get that done by early December, then Andrew is willing to adjust some of his plans to help us achieve our goals. Anyone with suggestions on what they see as our biggest needs in this area should contact Dan Ribbens so that he can incorporate them into an overall plan for player/coach training and development.

Tournament Report:

A final financial report was presented showing all income and expenses in detail. The tournament made a record profit this year around $17,500. This is in addition to the more than $3,250 in advertising profit already paid out directly to the teams which brought that money in. In addition each of the FCSB teams was able to participate in the tournament "free" of charge.

The tentative budget for the $17,500 is as follows:

$6,400 was divided among all the FCSB teams based on tournament labor

$2,000 is being set aside for financial aide requests for next year

$1,500 is tentatively being set aside to do another project at Storke field in order to make an additional field possible

$7,600 for FCSB training programs (contact Dan Ribbens for details)

The dates for next year’s FCSB tournament will be July 31 - Aug. 1.

Club WEB Site Development: The beta site for the new FCSB WEB site can be found at www.west.net\~trichler\fcsborg\main1.htm. It will become fcsb.org in the near future but if you have any feedback please pass it along to Nelson Trichler. Nelson has done an outstanding job getting this WEB site going. It really looks great and is well organized to make information easy to find and to grow along with our organization.

Portable Practice Goal Demonstration: Last month Fred Guillermo organized a demonstration of a light weight (20 lbs) compact (carry it under one arm when collapsed) portable goal which costs $200. If you practice where there are no goals you might want to consider this as an option. Contact Jeff Waxman or Auturo Durantes of the U-13 boys team for more information since they have purchased two of them for their team.

Receive your monthly FCSB Board Minutes by E-Mail, sooner and with less cost by E-mailing your E-mail address to wrm@plpt.com. (When attachments which are not in machine readable form are present, the minutes will still be mailed.)

White FCSB Coach/Manger Polo Shirts: Coaches/managers who did not receive one of the white FCSB polo shirts last summer should contact Dan Ribbens who now has them.

Board Meeting Agenda Items: In order to get an item put on the FCSB board agenda, call Bill McKinnon’s work phone number 566-2255 ext.3181(anytime day or night) and talk to Bill or leave a message (or send E-mail to wrm@plpt.com). Agenda items entered 48 hours or more before the meeting will get put on the agenda.

Next General Board Meeting: The next regularly scheduled general board meeting will be Thursday, January 7, 1999 at 7:30 p.m. at the McKinnon’s home located at 670 Alto Drive. Board meetings are open to all members of the Club.

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 p.m.

Minutes taken by Bill McKinnon

October 1, 1998

The meeting was called to order by Blair Spaulding at 7:45 p.m. at the Ely’s home. Present Dan Ribbens, Blair Spaulding, Nelson Trichler, Bill McKinnon, Jeff Ino, Fred Guillermo, Brynn Crowe, Ron Ely, Judy Hug, Jon Hess, Jim Blascovich, Brandon "Zippy" DeShazer; absent Brian Hersh, Carolyn Binkley, Rhonda Lee, Karen Ribbens.

Tournament Report:

A detailed financial report was presented showing all all income and expenses in detail. The bottom line is that the tournament made something over $17,000 in profit. This is in addition to the more than $3,000 in advertising profit already paid out directly to the teams which brought that money in. In addition each of the FCSB teams was able to participate in the tournament "free" of charge.

The board decided to have the FCSB Executive Board (see last month’s minutes) make a recommendation as soon as possible as to the distribution of the tournament profits between money given directly back to each team (based on the team labor hours report presented by Nelson Trichler from the input compiled by Ron Ely), money used for providing Club wide training of both players and coaches, and money reserved for capital expenses such as a storage container. The Executive Board will meet Thursday, October 8.

Next year’s tournament will be in August again but the exact date is still being worked out with UC Santa Barbara.

Dan Ribbens reported on our efforts to Upgrade the Quality of Our Coaching and Player Training. J.T.May and J.Johnson have already started working individually with each of our teams and have been very well received. Dan is planning to talk soon with the Ziemer brothers to get input on a long term plan to continue to improve of FCSB’s training and coaching.

Dan introduced Brandon "Zippy" DeShazer to the board. Zippy has been actively working with the AYSO program out at Storke Field on Saturdays. Dan is interested in working with Zippy to develop a local U-10 program to provide good fundamental skills training for younger players in a low key "fun" atmosphere.

Dan also reported that all the coaches were pleased to hear about their subscription to the magazine "Success in Soccer" (which FCSB is paying for) which is written specifically for soccer coaches.

Practice Fields: FCSB now has an official permit to use the S.B. Junior High fields on Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m. If you want to use the lights they would have to be paid for by the teams using the fields when they are on. It was reported that Donna Venzor knows the procedure to be followed in order to arrange to have the lights turned on.

Game day fields: Just a reminder, the last team to use Bishop at the end of the weekend (this may be on Saturday if there are no Sunday games - check your master schedule sent out last month with the minutes) needs to move the soccer goals completely off the football field so that they are out of the way for the Bishop football team.

Also, the black net bag contains the nets which should be used at Dwight Murphy field because they have the "fancy new goal attachment clips" attached to those nets. This makes putting up the nets a snap (pun intended).

Very Portable Practice Goals: Fred Guillermo reported that he is arranging to have a representative from Power Goal Inc. come to his team’s practice sometime in the first week of October to demonstrate their 12 lbs portable practice goal. There was discussion about whether individual teams or the Club would buy these if they are found to be useful. In any event, if you want to check them out contact Fred at 687-6867. The cost of the goals is $200 each but they would be discounted slightly at the demonstration and/or depending on quantity ordered.

Xara T-shirts: A couple of years ago many of our players ordered T-shirts from Xara which had the FCSB logo on the front and "Xara" across the back. You have probably seen some of the older players and some of the coaches wearing these. They all love them. If any teams, players, coaches, parents are interested in ordering more of these please contact Bill McKinnon (946-5095) within the next couple of weeks so that a single order can be put together. The cost would be about $6 each.

FCSB.org will soon be the official FCSB WEB Site. Nelson Trichler reported that our new Club WEB site is now up. Check it out and forward any suggestions to Nelson. This can become a great help in our efforts to improve communications within our Club as well as between our Club and everyone else.

CYSA-South team kits are here: New teams get bags as well as the traditional binders. Contact Karen Ribbens if you have not yet received yours.

Registrar’s Report: Karen Ribbens sent her report with Dan.

Player Loan - form no longer needed to borrow players - See CYSA league bulletin or contact Karen.

Remember that the yellow registration cards expire on October 15. We should be getting permanent cards for the late added players and teams within a week. Karen will call managers when they arrive. Remember, you turn in yellow cards before Karen gives you the laminated white cards!

Polo shirts ordered. They are currently at the embroidery place getting the logos. Xara only had 15 shirts in stock (6medium, 5 large, 4 XL). Those coaches without, please let Karen know size and she will reserve one for you!

"Success in Soccer" subscriptions for each coach have been sent in. The magazine should be sent soon. Any coach not receiving a subscription, please let Karen know so that she can follow up. We also have a few copies of the first 3 issues available to caoches for reference. Please tell Dan if you want to borrow one of these issues.

Karen visited with Russ Martin recently and has some concerns about the speed at which he is processing drop/transfer forms. Her best suggestion is to plan ahead as mush as possible to allow some time between when you want to drop a player and then add a new player. Just a word to the wise. If a situation should arise where we need a player dropped immediately, it will take a drive down to Russ in Ventura to be sure.

Russ Martin also said that there will soon be some major revisions in the process for the ODP selection within CYSA-South. Steve Sampson may be offered the position, and it will involve more coach recommendation and outside observation than the current process of "trying-out" just one weekend. It will be somehow tied in with the "2010" program nationwide that Steve Sampson is involved with. We will hear more on that later but Karen just wanted to keep us all up to date on the rumors floating around.

Referees: For the last two years the Ventura Referee’s Association has been sending referees from Ventura up to do our games. We probably should not have let this situation develop but we did not have a local referee association and we were a little lazy. Since with the growth of soccer there are not enough referees in Ventura to cover their own games, they have reasonably decided to insist that all Santa Barbara games are covered by local Santa Barbara referees. Last summer they put on a clinic (to which we got 18 people to attend) to train/certify referees. This was a precondition of allowing any Santa Barbara teams to play in ECRSL.

The bottom line is still that we do not have enough referees locally in Santa Barbara who are willing to do our Club games. We are going to come up short from time to time. Fundamentally we need to expand the pool.

If you know of anyone that is interested please pass their name on to Bill McKinnon (964-5095). If they are not officially certified as a USSF referee, they can be trained. If they are let’s get them out there now.

Referee Certification Clinic starting Wednesday Evening, October 7: This is late notice, but there will be a referee training/certification clinic spread over a three day period.

Wednesday and Thursday 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. and Sunday 9-4 p.m. at the Best Western Camarillo Inn. (Call Bill McKinnon (964-5095) or Blair Spaulding (967-8875) for directions)

For reservations call Maggie at (805)383-5755.

There is a fee of $25 per person but this is almost covered by the first game you referee.

More Soccer Fields Downtown? Blair Spaulding reported that there is currently a petition drive to encourage the creation of an open sports field complex in conjunction with a new elementary school on a 13 acre site between the 101 freeway and the beach near Sausapuedes Street. It is currently being used by the Con Rock company.

Minutes taken by Bill McKinnon

September 3, 1998

The meeting was called to order by Blair Spaulding at 7:50 p.m. at the McKinnon’s home. Present Dan Ribbens, Blair Spaulding, Nelson Trichler, Bill McKinnon, Jeff Ino, Fred Guillermo, Brynn Crowe, Ron Ely, Carolyn Binkley, Judy Hug, Rhonda Lee, Karen Ribbens, Jon Hess, Jim Blascovich; absent Brian Hersh.

FCSB Annual Club Barbecue & Picnic will be held Friday, September 11 from 4:30 p.m. to dark tentatively at Tucker’s Grove (Kiwanis Meadows): We will be taking an All-Club picture again this year (about 6:00pm). Karen Ribbens is arranging to have this picture taken. All players should wear their red and black team jersey or at least bring it for the picture. If individual teams wish to organize team pictures, they need to do so themselves.

FCSB will provide drinks, ice, large barbecue fire. Each team will be asked to organize the rest of the food for their own team. Everyone is urged to get there as early as possible so that there is plenty of time to eat, visit and take "the picture".

This is a great way to start of the Fall season. Be sure to get all of your players and their families to attend. It’s a lot of fun!

Fields for Games: IMPORTANT NOTE: The team which has the first game on a field on a particular day (see attached master FCSB schedules for Dwight Murphy and Bishop High) is responsible for:

Painting all the fields lines and returning the paint machine to storage.

Putting up the nets and corner flags,

The paint machine and nets will be stored at the Ribbens house.

The trem which has the last game on a field on a particular day is responsible for:

Taking down the nets and corner flags and returning them to the Ribbens house. This is true on Saturday as well as Sunday because the first team to be playing on Sunday will be going by the Ribbens to get the nets on Sunday morning.

Volunteer needed to make weekly reminder calls to team managers about field setup/takedown duties. Fred Guillermo is checking on one possible volunteer but if anyone knows of anyone who might be willing to do this, please contact Dan Ribbens (964-4843).

Cleanup Evening at the Ribbens Wednesday, September 9, 5:00pm - dark: In order to make space available for the nets and paint machines at the Ribbens we need to clean out an area of his yard and need volunteers to help out for a couple of hours. They have kindly donated the space, the least the rest of us can do is clean it up.

Practice Fields: Field space for practice this Fall is going to be tighter than it has ever been because La Colina’s renovated fields will not be available until January at the earliest.

Also UCSB has officially notified us that no youth soccer teams are to practice at Storke field period. We have told them that we will notify all of our teams of their policy.

Using Las Positas for Saturday Games: Just last week Las Positas finally responded to our request (made many month earlier) to possibly use their fields for Saturday games. AYSO has contracted with UCSB to use Storke Field for Saturday games and, therefore, no longer wants to use Las Positas. However, since this Fall’s schedules have already been set and are difficult and costly to change, we cannot really even consider using Las Positas fields for Saturday games. However, Blair Spaulding was directed to explore the possibliity of making an arangment now to use those fields next year for some of our games. Under no circumstance would we ever give up the use of Dwight Murphy but we might use Las Positas in place of Bishop on Saturday especially since we would not be limited to only 3 games. Fields for Sunday games is still the real problem.

The All-Club Kick Around was a great success! Blair Spaulding organized the first FCSB All-Club kick around on Wednesday, August 21, at Las Positas Park. Forty-three FCSB players of all ages showed up and a couple of games were organized following which a large number of pizzas were quickly consumed. It was a great low key way for the players from the various teams to get to know each other.

Treasurer Report: Karen Ribbens reported that most team fees have been paid and that she expects the outstanding ones to soon be paid. Also, Dave Mazzetta is in the process of reviewing our accounting procedures both for the Club as a whole as well as for individual teams with the goal of making recommendations to the board on how we can improve them.

1998 FCSB Summer Tournament Report:

Rhonda Lee organized and turned over all of the advertising money. This money will be distributed directly back to the teams which sold the ads as soon as Nelson Trichler is able to calculate the cost of printing the ads so that that can be subtracted out. Somewhere aroung 70-75% of the add revenue is generally what is returned to the teams. The Ad money should be paid out within a week or two.

Ron Ely has just about gotten the labor figures together. The expectation is that at the next board meeting, we will be able to use these figures to determine the distribution of the tournament proceeds which will be returned to the individual teams.

There was a good discussion of how to encourage and account for the donation of materials (such as tractors or sod). The conclusion was that providing the company which contributed the services with a charitable contribution for their taxes would be most beneficial to the actual contributor as well as to FCSB. A motion was made and passed to award Peggy Lamb 5 labor hours for the work she did in arranging for the donation of sod for our Storke Field improvment project.

Next year’s tournament is tentatively scheduled for the third weekend in August both because a tournament later in August would probably draw more older teams and because this leaves open the possibility of using the Polo fields since they have a summer break at this time.

FCSB.org will soon be the official FCSB WEB Site. Our WEB site name has been officially registered and will soon be up. Nelson Trichler presented a diagram of the information that this site will contain. It is going to be GREAT! Stay tuned for details.

Dan Ribbens reported on our efforts to Upgrade the Quality of Our Coaching and Player Training. Dan has talked with the Ziemer brothers and with Vogelsinger about coming to Santa Barbara to put on a coaching clinic for our coaches. This looks very promising. He has also talked with J.T.May and J.Johnson about the possibility of providing some training for the FCSB teams. Dan is actively pursuing these options.

Dan Ribbens proposed buying a subscription to the magazine "Success in Soccer" for each of the team coaches and our keeper coach. Dan feels that this will be a benefit for the coaches to stimulate new ideas and discussions. The motion passed unanimously.

Managers should Report Scores to FCSB as well as their ECRSL Division Director: Last year Blair Spaulding kept a record of all of our Club’s teams scores each week. This year Carolyn Binkley (683-8886) has agreed to keep track of these statistics. So when you call in your scores to your division director (which must be done when you have finished your games each weekend) just make another call to Carolyn so that she can maintain our Club statistics.

FCSB Bumper Stickers have been made and one is being given to each player and coach in the Club.

Restructure of Board of Directors: Ron Ely made a formal proposal to restructure the FCSB Board of directors as follows in order to improve our ability to more effectively handle the growth we are experiencing and encourage more.

There should be an executive board established consisting of Blair Spaulding (our president), Dan Ribbens (our head coach), Bill McKinnon (our secretary), Nelson Trichler (our tournament director) and Jeff Ino (our keeper coach).

There should be a general board consisting of one member from each team plus the executive board members. The members from each team would each be given a specific job. The job would not necessarily require a lot of time, but it would be well defined. (Some suggested positions might be sponsorships, team agent, player agent, field coordinator, tournament director assistant, etc.)

The motion passed unanimously. Specific details remain to be worked out but the overall thrust is to be more formally organized so that we can effectively and efficiently grow our organization and provide our players with the best competitive soccer program possible.

Agenda items entered 48 hours or more before the meeting will get put on the agenda.

Next Meeting: The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be Thursday, October 1, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ely’s home located at 4141 Mariposa Drive in Hope Ranch (go to the guest house in back).. Board meetings are open to all members of the Club.

Karen Ribbens is arranging to have this picture taken (I hope).

New Treasurer Update: Dave Mazzetta will be the new FCSB treasurer. He is currently reviewing our financial accounts to determine what tax filings we need to make. For the moment Karen Ribbens is still writing the FCSB account checks.

Registration Update: Karen Ribbens has submitted all of the player registrations turned in to date to CYSA-South and is hopeful that we will receive our white permanent cards near the beginning of the Fall season.

The board voted unanimously to add $1 to the annual per player fee to cover the cost of an FCSB window/bumper sticker for each player. Now that the FCSB per-player annual fee has been established, Karen will be contacting each of the team managers to pay the full fee for each of their players.

Coaches/Managers: Annual ECRSL Fall Schedule Handout Meeting will be held Wednesday, August 17, at 7:30 PM at the Sequoia Middle School at 2855 Borchard Road in Newbury Park. The main event at this meeting is that the Fall schedules will be handed out. Although this is not a mandatory meeting, each team manager should be sure that someone picks up their schedules for them if they cannot attend themselves.

Penny Cortright made a formal request to allow Lalia Gerges (who was "grandfathered in" as an underage player when the U-14 Storm team first moved to FCSB a few months ago) to transfer down to Penny’s U-13 team. The wrinkle is that Lalia could actually be playing on the U-12 team. The board unanimously approved this request as simply a logical extension of the "grandfather clause" rather than a new request to play up.

The Financial Aid Application Sub Committee Report was presented by Blair Spaulding. The report recommended that the $2900 allocated to this purpose this year ($900 from a per player fee for this purpose and $2000 from last year’s tournament) be prorated so that each applicant receive 75% of what they requested.

The report was discussed at some length with various other options and/or caps discussed. In the end, the report was unanimously accepted with the proviso that the funds be turned over to the corresponding team managers AND that if one of these players drops out during the year (August 1 - July 31), that the prorated portion of that player’s annual aid grant be returned to the Club.

1998 FCSB Summer Tournament Report:

The tournament was a great success thanks to all of the volunteer work done by all of our players and families! 102 teams participated including many teams from northern California and even a team from the Washington DC area.

The rough figures indicate that we will probably end up with a net profit of around $16,000. That does not include profits from advertising sales which will be paid out directly to the teams which sold the adds (as soon as the accounting is complete). That also does not include the $350 per team entry fee which was waived for the FCSB teams.

The single biggest difference financially came from concession sales. Donna Venzor has turned our concession efforts into a major profit center. All phases of the concession sales made money.

The single biggest difference in atmosphere came from Nelson Trichler’s far sighted work project to improve Storke field so that we could get three additional fields out there and hold the whole tournament in a single location. This also enabled us to centralize the concession and head quarter’s operation to greatly improve traffic flow and the overall appearance of the tournament.

David Sheldon from UCSB Administration sent us a very nice letter of appreciation (attached) for the significant work FCSB did in improving Storke Fields.

New FCSB WEB Site to be Developed. Nelson Trichler has arranged with a company named "Make It Work" to host a new official FCSB WEB site for free. The board unanimously voted $150 to pay for officially registering "FCSB.org" as our address on the World Wide Web. This will be much easier for everyone to remember and find. Stay tuned for details of when the new site is up and running.

A Special Thanks to Doug Binkley for all of the work he has done for our Club over the years. Doug has always helped us tirelessly at the tournament and then last year when we were having trouble finding a coach for our young girls team, Doug stepped forward to take on this task as well. We all appreciate Doug’s efforts in getting that team started.

Each FCSB Team Should Have a Board Representative to attend the once a month board meetings (first Thursday evening of each month) to improve our two way communication within the Club. If your team does not have someone representing you at the board meetings, find someone. Together we can build the competitive soccer community in Santa Barbara.

Continuing to Upgrade the Quality of Our Coaching and Player Training. Dan Ribbens expressed the strong feeling that FCSB’s main purpose is to develop soccer players to the maximum of their ability. To do this we need to develop a plan to continually improve what we offer in terms of coaching and training. We need to develop a Club coaching philosophy and bring in guest trainers from time to time to infuse new ideas and approaches into our training programs. To start this effort off the board voted to allocate $2,000 to be spent at Dan Ribbens discretion as seed money in developing a program which will directly benefit all of our players and teams.

La Colina Junior High’s field renovations will NOT be completed until January, 1999. Therefore, those fields will not be available for anyone this Fall.

Reimbursement of Registration Fee for Keeper Training Clinic. The board unanimously voted to reimburse Jeff Ino $170 for the registration fee for a top flight keeper coach training clinic he recently attended.

Location for Storage Container Location: With the delay in the renovation of the La Colina fields, we are looking for an alternative location to put an 8 by 20 foot storage container to store all of the gear we are collecting as a Club. If anyone knows of a location where this could be done (inexpensively or free) please contact Nelson Trichler at 967-4430.

Agenda items entered 48 hours or more before the meeting will get put on the agenda.

Next Meeting: The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be Thursday, September 3, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. at the McKinnon’s home located at 670 Alto Drive. Board meetings are open to all members of the Club.

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 p.m.

Minutes taken by Bill McKinnon

July 9, 1998

The meeting was called to order by Bill McKinnon at 7:45 p.m. at the McKinnon’s home. Present Karen Ribbens, Nelson Trichler, Bill McKinnon, Ron Ely, Becky Mota, Dave Franz; absent Carolyn Binkley, Jeff Ino, Blair Spaulding, Mickey Cornish, Judy Hug, Brian Hersh, Rhonda Lee, Dan Ribbens, Doug Keep, Sandra Tyler.

New Treasurer Update: Ron Ely recently talked to Dave Mazzetta (a CPA) who has a child on the U-11 boys team and has said that he would be willing to help the Club in this role. Karen Ribbens got Dave’s telephone number and said that she will follow up on working out the transfer of duties.

Registration Update: Karen Ribbens reported that at least two administrator forms for each team had been processed by Blair Spaulding locally a week and a half ago and sent on to the State. She hopes to receive the white cards back in about another two weeks.

In addition, Jeff Ino (our Club keeper coach) has officially been registered as an administrator/coach for every one of our teams.

Karen will process team player registrations as soon as a manager has them ready. With all of the teams we have, however, you should plan to allow her a week to get them done.

Coaches/Managers: Annual ECRSL Fall Bracketing Meeting will be held Wednesday, July 15, at 7:30 PM at the Sequoia Middle School at 2855 Borchard Road in Newbury Park. The Fall playing brackets (gold, silver, bronze) will be presented. Please make sure your team is represented.

Also, you received with your ECRSL Team Application a "Team Scheduling Information" sheet. If you have not returned this form to Lois Sanford, ECRSL Scheduler, then bring it to the meeting. Blank copies will be available at the meeting.

(note to Blair Spaulding) Please make sure that Lois Sanford gets an approved copy of our field permits because she will not schedule games until she has received them. Copies may be faxed to (805) 499-1081 or mailed to Lois.

1998 FCSB Summer Tournament (August 1-2) Report:

Counting the FCSB teams we have 99 teams signed up. The brackets will be tentatively set within a day and a tentative schedule sent to the referee’s association so that they can schedule referees.

UCSB has changed their policy and will now allow us to prepare and sell food at our tournament provided we meet their health requirements and pay them 10% of the proceeds. Donna Venzor (682-6498) is responsible for coordinating and approving all food and concession sales during our tournament.

Big Dog is doing the T-shirts for us using five colors for less then we have been paying for three. 700 shirts have been ordered.

The next Tournament Committee meeting will be Tuesday, July 14, at the Trichler home at 7:00 PM.

With the additional fields made available at Storke Field through our recent work project and the extended summer time daylight hours, we are planning to hold the entire tournament at UCSB. This will greatly simplify our logistics.

Final Action on Financial Aid Requests was tabled until next meeting because none of the three committee members which had forwarded their recommendations via Karen Ribbens were present to answer questions.

La Colina Junior High’s field renovations will NOT be completed until January, 1999. Therefore, those fields will not be available for anyone this Fall.

FCSB Club Bumper (or window) Sticker designs were presented. Of the four designs, two stood out as clear favorites. Nelson Trichler has the designs for anyone who is interested in providing their input.

Next Meeting: The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be Thursday, Aug 6, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. at the Spaulding’s home located at 636 Edgewood. Board meetings are open to all members of the Club.

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

Minutes taken by Bill McKinnon

June 4, 1998

The meeting was called to order by Bill McKinnon at 7:50 p.m. at the McKinnon’s home. Present Karen Ribbens, Nelson Trichler, Carolyn Binkley, Bill McKinnon, Jeff Ino, Fred Guillermo; absent Blair Spaulding, Mickey Cornish, Judy Hug, Brian Hersh, Rhonda Lee, Ron Ely, Dan Ribbens, Doug Keep, Sandra Tyler.

Informational Meeting Only: Due to a series of coincidences, this meeting turned out to have a low attendance. As a result, the decision of those present was to make this an informational meeting only with no official business being conducted. (Next year we will try to avoid having a meeting in early June.)

Team Coach/Administrator Registration forms due before June 20: Karen Ribbens needs to receive the filled out team coach/administrator registration and disclosure forms by June 20 so that permanent cards can be issued before August 1. There will no longer be any temporary cards issued for administrators so managers be sure to get these in.

Managers: Player registration material is now available from Karen Ribbens.

1998 FCSB Summer Tournament (August 1-2) Report:

Storke Field repair work to make it possible to put 9 fields where we used to only get 7. This project grew from 4000 sq. feet of sod to 8000 sq. feet and from two main days of work to three but it has been a GREAT success. High spots were removed, low spots were raised, fill from El Nino was added and sod was layed on top followed by a thorough soaking. UCSB is very happy with the work we did and is following up by watering the repaired areas frequently. Parents, players and siblings representing all of our teams pulled together to make this a real success with benefits for the whole community. Nelson Trichler deserves a great deal of thanks from all of us for pulling this project together.

Counting the FCSB teams we have about 40 teams signed up so far with the number of entries increasing rapidly. There are many teams from northern California and even one from Virginia.

Big Dog has agreed to do T-shirts for us using three colors for 30% less then we have been paying. Nelson will meet with them in about a week to work out specific designs.

The next Tournament Committee meeting will be Tuesday, June 16, at the Trichler home at 7:00 PM.

FCSB team managers: Please fill out the enclosed tournament application and return it before July 1. No money is needed J but we need the information provided.

Super Club Tournament: Attached is a flyer on a tournament for "top" teams from all over the country to be held at CYSA-South soccer complex in San Bernadino, July 16-20.

Tournament Play on School Days: A letter (agreed to at the last board meeting) expressing our Club’s opinion that tournaments should not be allowed to schedule games on school days will be faxed to CYSA-South immediately since they will be considering this matter on Saturday.

Next Meeting: The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be Thursday, July 9, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. at the McKinnon’s home located at 670 Alto Drive. Board meetings are open to all members of the Club.

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.

Minutes taken by Bill McKinnon

May 7, 1998

The meeting was called to order by Blair Spaulding at 7:50 p.m. at the Spaulding’s home. Present Dan Ribbens, Nelson Trichler, Bill McKinnon, Blair Spaulding, Jeff Ino, Mickey Cornish, Judy Hug, Chris Jones; absent Brian Hersh, Jim Acos, Rhonda Lee, Ron Ely, Carolyn Binkley, Karen Ribbens, Doug Keep, Sandra Tyler.

Registrar’s Report: Karen Ribbens reported that by June 1 we need to complete and send in our annual application (along with fee) to CYSA to be a League of Registration. Karen is planning to do this.

Treasurer’s Report: Karen also reported that she has not yet contacted Dave Mazzetta or Janine Pugh concerning taking over the treasurer job but that it is now at the top of her "to do" list! A printout of all Club income and expenses for the year just ending April 30 was also presented. Anyone wanting a copy should contact Karen.

The following teams have not yet paid for their All-Club pictures; BU-14 (Nelson) 35; BU-13 65; BU-11 75; GU-12 95; BU-12 20; GU-11 15. Please send Karen a check.

FCSB Club Financial Aid to Individual Players: The Club’s "Scholarship Policies and Procedures" were reviewed and revised (see attachment). Also attached is a form which should be used by managers in applying for financial aid for individual players. MANAGERS: THIS JUNE 1 IS THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING FCSB FINANCIAL AID APPLICATIIONS FOR THE PLAYING YEAR STARTING IN AUGUST 1998. The FCSB Club money which is set aside for this purpose will be allocated among the players whose applications are submitted by June 1 (as announced in last month’s Board minutes). Blair has been authorized by the Board to appoint a three person committee to review at one time all the applications submitted and make recommendations to the Board.

Referees for Fall 1998 Season: For the last two years our fall games have been officiated by referees assigned by the Ventura Referees Association. With the growth of soccer and the scarcity of referees (especially to do youth games) this arrangement is no longer working well. Last fall there were often not three referees and sometimes no referees. As a result, ECRSL has stated that if Santa Barbara is not able to provide its own pool of referees to do our games during the Fall season, then teams from Santa Barbara will not be allowed to play. Clearly it is in the interest of each of us to see that more referees are trained and certified (see below).

Local Referee Training and Certification Clinic to be held the weekend of June 6-7. We need to get a minimum of 25 participants to make this clinic happen. All coaches/managers should get the commitment of as many prospective referees as they can to attend this clinic. The fee is $20 per participant but FCSB and the other local club will cover half of this cost so that it is only $10 each. Call Blair Spaulding (967-8875) and let him know the name, address, phone number of each person that you find. Coaches and Managers, if you cannot forward any names to Blair (and even if you can), you should strongly consider attending yourselves because we need certified referees or we are not going to have a Fall season. Hey, refereeing is a great way to get exercise and earn money at the same time. Older players can be certified and at least run lines at the younger games.

1998 FCSB Summer Tournament (August 1-2) Report:

In the next week, Nelson Trichler is presenting a formal proposal to UCSB about the work we propose to do for them on Storke Field in order to make it possible to fit 9 fairly full sized fields in. The work will consist of filling low spots and leveling high spots AND Nelson was able to arrange to have 3000 sq. ft of bermuda sod donated to greatly speed up and simplify the recovery process.

Enough fields have been arranged for located from UCSB to Carpinteria to accommodate a tournament of 140 teams. That would be a big tournament.

The first staff meeting of the Tournament Committee is to be held Tuesday, May 12 at 7pm at Nelson's house (967-4430).

Managers: Add sales may now begin. Copy the attached form and get your team members going on this fund raiser. Proceeds from each add sales (minus the cost of running the add - about 25%) go directly back to the team that sold the adds.

Balance Bar and Big Dog are the two companies that we are actively working with as corporate sponsors of this summer’s tournament. Negotiations will also be pursued with Balance Bar about being a Club sponsor in addition to being a tournament sponsor.

The tournament date for 1999 will probably be moved to later in August to correspond to a break in the summer polo season so that we can further our continuing effort to use the polo fields in Summerland.

Practice Fields: FCSB has insurance certificates on file with most school districts and parks in the area. As always, however, practice field space is up to individual teams. FCSB wishes to maintain its relationship with Las Positas park (it reopens May 17). Teams wishing to practice there (which does require paying for field rental) should contact Dan Ribbens (964-4843).

FCSB Teams for Fall 1998: FCSB is growing. Lets all welcome the current U-13 girls Riviera Storm team into the FCSB organization for the upcoming season. Next fall we will have 5 girls teams U-11 through U-15. FCSB will also have 9 boys teams from U-11 through U-18 (there are two U-15 boys teams).

Team representative at Board Meetings: Any team without an official team liaison representing them at our Board meetings needs to arrange for one. This is our two way communication channel and we need to keep it in good working order in order to best meet everyone’s needs.

Tournament Play on School Days: There was a discussion of the adverse effect that tournaments which schedule games on school days have on our players. Nelson is going to draft a letter (to be reviewed at the next FCSB board meeting) to CYSA-South expressing our strong concern about allowing tournaments to schedule games on school days.

FCSB bumper sticker: There was discussion of and widespread agreement that FCSB should create and distribute an FCSB bumper sticker to its players, families, etc.

Minutes taken by Bill McKinnon

April 9, 1998

The meeting was called to order by Blair Spaulding at 7:50 p.m. at the McKinnon’s home. Present Dan Ribbens, Nelson Trichler, Bill McKinnon, Blair Spaulding, Jeff Ino, Mickey Cornish, Judy Hug, Brian Hersh, Jim Acos; absent Rhonda Lee, Ron Ely, Carolyn Binkley, Karen Ribbens, Doug Keep, Sandra Tyler.

Review of Club Tryouts: The general conclusion was that the tryouts "looked good" and went well. Focusing the Club’s Spring tryouts on the younger players and teams was seen as a positive move which we should continue in future years. Throughout the rest of the year all teams can and do invite new players to come to their individual team practices for a tryout.

We are still looking for a coach for the new U-11 boys team. Please contact Dan Ribbens ( 964-4843) with the names of anyone you know who might be interested.

FCSB Club Treasurer Position: Last month the board decided to have Karen Ribbens discuss with Janine Pugh and Dave Mazzetta the best way to work this out so that we can get regular reports and "expert" help with filing tax returns, etc. Karen was not available for this meeting so we do not know where this stands.

Practice Field Notes: This time of year is often difficult because of conflicts with baseball and each team is just working around this problem. The Las Positas Park soccer fields will be closed from now until May 16 for its "Spring rest".

There was a good discussion on FCSB’s policy toward multiple teams in the same age bracket. For the last two years FCSB has had two teams at what is now the U-14 Boys age bracket. The benefit is that more kids are able to play competitive soccer. FCSB’s policy on second teams was written and accepted by the board just over one year ago. It is reprinted below:

Multiple Teams at the Same Age: FCSB’s first priority is to provide for a single team at each age level composed of the strongest players available. Once these teams are formed and have coaches assigned to them, then FCSB will support the formation of a second "B" team if enough players capable of playing at a competitive level have tried out for but not made the "A" team. Teams are to be formed by early May and will stay together as a team until after the following year’s state cup competition when all teams are reformed. At this time players could be moved both up or down between the two teams.

The drawback to a second team occurs when there are not enough players for a second team and/or when there is contention over particular players. The idea of the Club policy was that this would be worked out once a year in the Spring and that the teams would then not be changed until the following Spring. Dan Ribbens suggested that the natural friction that can arise from the above interactions can be worked out best by the coaches of the two teams working directly together with one another. He felt that his last coaches meeting was a good start in that direction.

Discussion of Club Provided Financial Aid to Individual Players: Up until now, FCSB has provided aid to teams as a whole through fundraising programs and Tournament labor sharing money. The individual teams then used this money as they saw fit to best benefit their team. Some used it for equipment, some for scholarships, etc. Although there has been a formal application for individual players to apply to the Club for some financial aid, no one has yet applied largely because everyone knew that there was no money to allocate for this purpose. Mostly from Tournament proceeds retained by the Club but also from a small fee charged for annual registration, there is now some money available for the purpose of individual player financial aid (let’s use 2500 as an estimate for discussion purposes). Clearly on a Club wide basis this will not go a long way but $5 -$15 per month to a particularly needy individual player might make the difference between being able to play or not.

With that in mind the board decided to solicit financial aid applications for individual players from each of the team managers. The deadline for submitting requests is June 1 of this year for assistance to run from August 1998 through July 1999. The board directed Blair Spaulding, as Club president, to appoint a committee of three to review these requests all together and bring a report and recommendation to the board’s June meeting. The committee will evaluate the requests and suggest a division of the available funds to best and most fairly meet the requests.

MANAGERS/COACHES READ THIS: If you wish to have a player(s) apply for financial aid for next year, your application must be received by this June 1 so that all requests can be considered together. Appendix A of the FCSB Player/Parent Club Manual (given to all players last September) describes the "Scholarship Policies and Procedures". (The deadline for submitting has changed to June 1, see above discussion). Applications should be sent to Football Club of Santa Barbara, P.O. Box 60208, Santa Barbara, CA 93160.

1998 FCSB Summer Tournament (August 1-2) Report: We have received our first six applications (with checks). Requests for applications (20-25 per week) are running about a month ahead of what we experienced for our Winter Cup tournaments.

Anyone interested in joining the tournament staff should contact Nelson Trichler (967-4430) as soon as possible. Nelson is planning to have the first meeting of the tournament committee around May 1. Hours worked by the tournament staff (during the tournament weekend only) are counted toward each worker’s team’s total labor hours. Although you could definitely earn more somewhere else, where else could you have so much fun J .

Add sales forms for the tournament program should be out by the end of this month to give everyone plenty of time to take advantage of this great money raising opportunity.

Formation of a Santa Barbara Referee’s Association is still being worked on but there is nothing new to report at this time.

Next Meeting: The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be Thursday, May 7, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. at the Spaulding’s home located at 636 Edgewood. Board meetings are open to all members of the Club.

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 p.m.

February 5, 1998

The meeting was called to order by Blair Spaulding at 7:50 p.m. at the Hersh’s home. Present Dan Ribbens, Nelson Trichler, Bill McKinnon, Blair Spaulding, Judy Hug, Jeff Ino, Mickey Cornish, Brian Hersh, Karen Ribbens, Ron Ely, Doug Binkley, Gary Gamble absent Rhonda Lee, Carolyn Binkley, Jim Acos; Doug Keep, Sam Tyler.

Gary Gamble of U.K. International gave a presentation: Gary Gamble is a former professional soccer player from England who has a USSF A coaching license and formed a company about 5 years ago to provide experienced soccer trainers from the United Kingdom to the Southern California region. Each summer he brings over about 50 trainer/coaches to put on soccer camps all over Southern California. From these he selects the best and tries to talk them into staying in the U.S. and working for him full time. Gary then hires these trainer/coaches and matches them up with clubs which want their services either on a part time or full time basis. This can range from a few hours a month for one team to full time training and coaching for another team. He is willing to tailor a program which is right for a particular Club.

Dan Ribbens and Blair Spaulding will talk to the coaches/managers of each or our individual teams to determine if there is a match starting in the Fall of this year between our Club’s needs and what U.K. International has to offer. The initial feedback from those who have seen Gary Gamble and his associates working first hand with some of our teams and/or at camps in this area was very positive.

FCSB Club Treasurer Needed: We need to find a volunteer to assume this job from Karen Ribbens who has been "temporarily filling in" for several years along with being the Club registrar. The treasurer job does not take a lot of time. Most of the work occurs during the summer months when teams are registering. This job also does not include the tournament accounting which is handled separately. Contact Karen Ribbens (964-4843) if you know of someone who would be willing to consider handling this job for us.

1099’s for coaches who were paid: These should have been sent to coaches by Feb 1. Contact Karen Ribbens if you have paid your coach and need help preparing the 1099.

All Club Picture will be ready soon: Next week that great All-Club picture taken at Tucker’s Grove last fall will be ready for those who have ordered it.

1st and 2nd Place League Trophies are at the Ribben’s hours: Please pick them up.

FCSB’s Playing Up Policy Finalized. A short, concise proposal for FCSB’s "player playing up" policy was presented by Blair Spaulding as had been requested by the board last month. This policy was discussed, revised, voted upon and passed 7 to 1. The new policy replaces any and all former "playing up" policies. FCSB’s playing up policy is:

As of 1/1/98, any player registering with FCSB shall register with the team at his/her age level.

Any player currently "playing up" on an FCSB team and who registered with FCSB prior to 1/1/98, may continue to "play up".

FCSB Spring Tryouts will be Saturday, March 21: Tryouts for U11 and U12 boys and girls teams will be held at Bishop Diego High School. Tentative approval for the site has been obtained and final approval should come this week. Any other individual FCSB teams which want to participate in this are welcome but the Club’s focus is on the younger teams.

Coaches are needed for the new U-11 teams. Please let Dan Ribbens know (964-4843) if you know of any interested coaching prospects.

1997 Winter Cup Tournament Report: Nelson Trichler reported that UCSB complimented us on leaving their fields cleaner and in better shape then before the tournament was held. This is great news because it helps create a positive working relationship with UCSB for our future tournaments.

Most of the income for the tournament is in and most of the bills have been paid. The balance should end up being about $12,000 (This does not count another $3,559 in advertising income which was already distributed to the teams which earned it OR the fact that all of the participating FCSB teams did not have to pay the $350 tournament entry fee.). After a discussion on how to allocate the $12,000, the board decided (4 to 2) that this year we would give more of the money to the individual teams rather than on Club wide expenses. The split will be 65% to the individual teams based on their labor participation and 35% retained for Club wide expenses which benefit all of our teams. The distribution to the individual teams will not be made before the next board meeting.

1998 FCSB Tournament - August 1-3, 1998. This will be the weekend before Fiesta starts. Nelson reported that with a little bit of work (to be done by us in May) we will be able to get another full sized field in at the Storke Field complex. In addition Las Positas, a number of the schools and even some fields in Carpinteria have been tentatively arranged for.

Nelson Trichler has our WEB site for this tournament up and hot linked to CYSA-South’s tournament list. Check it out, it looks great!

Balance is interested in continuing its relationship with our tournament. Discussions have also begun again with Big Dog as a second sponsor.

Capital Expenditures: The board agreed to allocate $2,000 for the purchase of a steel storage locker for the Club’s growing supply of portable goals, nets, chalk and paint machines, etc. The locker will not be purchased until a permanent site is found for it. One possibility is at the "to be built" fileds at La Colina Jr. High School. We would devide the space in half and donate the use of half of it to the facility.

The board also voted to order enough of the FCSB polo shirts which are being bought for all of the Club coaches so that each of the team managers/administrators could also have one. This is a way of saying thank you an is good advertising as well.

January 8, 1998

The meeting was called to order by Blair Spaulding at 7:40 p.m. at the McKinnon’s home. Present Dan Ribbens, Nelson Trichler, Bill McKinnon, Blair Spaulding, Rhonda Lee, Judy Hug, Jeff Ino, Mickey Cornish, Jim Acos; absent Brian Hersh, Karen Ribbens, Carolyn Binkley, Doug Keep, Ron Ely, Sam Tyler.

Women’s World Cup to be held United States in 1999: Blair Spaulding attended a lunch held at the Rose Bowl press box with the U.S. Women’s National Team to start promoting the 1999 Women’s World Cup. The final and 3rd place games will be the only games held at the Rose Bowl. To get on a list for pre-sale ticket information call (888) 4 WWC INFO. They will ask for an E-Mail address if you have one. For publications devoted to the Women’s World Cup call (310) 286-2992.

Winter Cup Tournament Report: Nelson Trichler presented a detailed report covering our very successful Winter Cup Tournament. Although all of the bills and income are not yet in, Nelson estimates that we will end up with a profit of $13-14,000; plus we bought 2 sets of portable goals and a second paint machine for $2,000; and we also had a net profit of over $3500 on add sale which will go directly back to the teams which sold the adds.

Donna Venzor did a great job with concessions, making money on both food and T-shirts for the first time in our three tournament history. There are still some left over Balance Bars (all flavors) which Donna is selling off at $11.85 a box which is a great price (682-6498).

Add sale profits will be distributed within the next few weeks. Distribution of the rest of the profits will be determined at a future board meeting when all the income, expenses and labor are accounted for. This has traditionally been split between profit sharing to the individual teams based on labor provided to put the tournament on and overall Club expenses.

FCSB Tournament Moving to the Summer - August 1-3, 1998. Mark this date down now because this is when we are planning to hold our 1998 tournament this year. This is the weekend before Fiesta. Also this date eliminates the worry about rain and allows all ages U-11 through U-19 to participate. Finally this will be an international tournament (that is we will be approved for international teams to come.)

Suggestions for increasing our tournament profits further were discussed. Additional sponsors was a likely possibility. Specifically Nelson agreed to draft (and Blair agreed to review) a letter to Wall Mart asking if they would provide matching funds for our next tournament. They are known to support this type of community activity.

FCSB’s Playing Up Policy. There was another lengthy discussion of the Club’s playing up policy. The following actions were taken.

The motion tabled from our November Board meeting made by Ron Ely to accept the "Sub-Committee Report to FCSB Board of Directors regarding ‘players-playing-up’ policy" (see copy attached to November minutes) AS IS as the Club’s policy for playing up was rejected (0/6) primarily because it was not written to be a policy statement.

The following guidelines were formally and individually approved by the board as a basis for writing a short policy statement.

Players who are already playing up will be grand fathered in and not be required to play at their appropriate age group.

All new players must begin playing within their appropriate age group.

Exceptions may be granted by the board for special circumstances such as an age group gap between teams, players unwanted on the appropriate age team and multiple teams per age group.

Blair Spaulding will draft a short policy statement based on the intent of the above guidelines for consideration by the board at its next meeting.

FCSB Spring Tryouts Discussion: There was a discussion of how best to organize the Club’s annual tryouts. Since the older established teams hold tryouts for individual players throughout the year and almost no new older players have been found at the annual tryouts, the board decided that we should concentrate our efforts on the younger teams at tryouts. Therefore, FCSB will hold its Spring tryouts for next Fall’s U-11 and U12 boys and girls teams on one Saturday either the second or third weekend in March.

Coaches are needed for the new U-11 teams. Please let Dan Ribbens know (964-4843) if you know of any interested coaching prospects. Blair Spaulding agreed to find a field to use for tryouts.

A motion passed to buy nice polo shirts for all coaches helping out with tryouts. Dan will arrange for these.

Basic rosters for FCSB teams of all ages should be finalized in May for teams of all ages so that everyone can plan ahead for the coming year. Our official FCSB Club year is May 1 of one year to May 1 of the next year.

Board Meeting Agenda Items: In order to get an item put on the FCSB board agenda, call Bill McKinnon’s work phone number 566-2255 ext.3181 (anytime day or night) and talk to Bill or leave a message. Agenda items entered 48 hours or more before the meeting will get put on the agenda.

Next Meeting: The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be Thursday, February 5, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hersh’s home located at 379 Princeton Avenue. Board meetings are open to all members of the Club.

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 10:45 p.m.
