Santa Barbara Board Minutes
November 7, 1996
-
The meeting was called to order by Blair
Spaulding at 7:35 p.m. at his home. Present: Dan Ribbens, Nelson Trichler,
Bill McKinnon, Carolyn Binkley, Blair Spaulding; absent Karen Ribbens,
Brain Hersh.
State Cup Entry Forms Due In State Office
by November 15: State Cup entry forms are due now! Also see attachment
for additional State Cup Details.
Player ID cards ready: Karen Ribbens has
the permanent player ID cards ready. The temporary cards must be turned
in when you pick up your permanent cards.
FCSB Barbecue Photos Are Back: Dan Ribbens
reported that the photographs taken at our "all Club" picnic
in September have come back.
ECRSL Meeting Report: The El Camino Real
Soccer League (the league we play in) called a special meeting to pass
along some information. This included the following information for coaches/managers.
* both home and visiting coach should call
in the score of their games or else your team will be fined by ECRSL
* if the coach's address changes, the ECRSL
registrar, Lois Sanford, must be notified so that notices of game reschedules
will be received by your team
* in the case of a red card, player cards
are not supposed to be kept by the referee; there is an automatic (no-appeal)
one game suspension which the coach must enforce; if a suspension is longer,
you will be notified in writing
* when the referees return the game pink
sheet, you should take a few minutes to verify that the score is correct
and that all cautions and red cards are assigned to the correct players
* all coaches must have an 'F' license by
January of 1997
FCSB Winter Classic Tournament:
Two pairs of heavy duty portable goals have
been purchased for our Club. Also a very good battery powered paint machine
has been purchased which draws paint from a 5 gallon paint can.
Over 70 teams have already entered the tournament.
This is already as big as the tournament was last year and the registrations
keep coming in.
Carolyn Binkley showed a version of the tournament
T-shirt design. It looks great and we think it will really appeal to the
players and parents this year.
Tournament Committee Meeting on Tuesday,
November 12, at 7:00 p.m. at Nelson Trichler's house. Nelson is organizing
this third meeting. We will soon be calling on all the teams for sign
ups for volunteers to help out at the actual tournament. Meetings will
probably be weekly after that. Contact Nelson at 967-4430 if you have
any tournament questions.
New Girls U-13 Team Started: FCSB has started
a new girls U-13 team which will participate in our Winter Tournament
and then continue on from there. Blair Spaulding is coaching initially
and Bob Peirson is the manager. We all welcome Bob to an active role in
our organization.
FCSB Club Handbook: Nelson Trichler prepared
and handed out a first draft of a proposed "handbook" to be
given to each of our player's next year. This purpose of this handbook
is to describe our Club's purpose and how it works from A to Z. Anyone
who would like to review this draft handbook and provide input should
contact Nelson or one of the other board members.
Next Meeting: The next regularly scheduled
board meeting will be Thursday, December 5, 1996 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ribben's
home located at 891 Cambridge. Dan said there would be a small celebration
for the holiday season. Board meetings are open to all members of the
Club.
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at
9:40 p.m.
Minutes taken by Bill McKinnon
October 3, 1996
The meeting was called to order by Blair
Spaulding at 7:40 p.m. at the Ribben's home. Present: Dan Ribbens, Nelson
Trichler, Bill McKinnon, Karen Ribbens, Blair Spaulding, Jorge Coch, Jim
Acos; absent Carolyn Binkley, Brain Hersh.
Fundraising Ideas: Jim Acos presented several
fundraising ideas for the board to consider either for the Club or individual
teams. Additional information was requested and no action was taken.
FCSB Winter Classic Tournament:
We were unsuccessful in gaining the cooperation
of the Summerland homeowner's association in supporting our tournament
on the practice polo fields there this year. We have, however, gotten
approval to use UCSB, Dos Pueblos High School, San Marcos High School
and Goleta Valley Junior High School for a total of 15 fields. Nelson
Trichler is also going to look into the possibility of reserving Las Positas
park (and only using Goleta Valley as a backup for this site).
The 5 used portable goals approved for purchase
last month were not purchased because the seller decided at the last minute
not to sell them. However, our need for goals is greatly reduced because
the current tournament field sites already have a lot of goals. Also the
Carpinteria AYSO has said that we could work out an arrangement to borrow
3 portable goals from them. The board voted 5-0 in favor of spending $2000
for the purchase of portable goals for the club. Dan Ribbens was going
follow up on this.
Twenty two teams have already sent in their
checks for the tournament. This is well ahead of last year. Additional
flyers are still being sent out.
The dedicated phone line for handling tournament
calls has been installed.
$450 for a very good line painting machine
which can dispense paint from cans rather than from spray bottles is still
allocated although the machine has not yet been purchased.
Tournament Committee Meeting on Tuesday,
October 15, at 7:00 p.m. at Nelson Trichler's house. Nelson is organizing
this second meeting. We can still use additional volunteers for this stage
of planning. Contact Nelson at 967-4430.
Discussions With Jorge Coch: Jorge Coch was
invited to come and introduce himself to those who did not already know
him. Discussions were held on how the Club might best be able to use his
very extensive and impressive background and experience.
White Backup T-shirt Jerseys: In order to
maintain availability and keep the price of these backup jerseys down
the board voted 5-0 to approve the purchase of up to 19 of these backup
jerseys for stock to be sold to any team(s) that needs them.
Need for Additional Board Members: As our
Club grows there is an increasing need for additional board members. Ideally
we would like to have every team represented on the board. If you know
of anyone who might be interested in helping on the board, please contact
any one of the existing board members.
Next Meeting: The next regularly scheduled
board meeting will be Thursday, November 7, 1996 at 7:30 p.m. at Blair
Spaulding's home located at 636 Edgewood Drive. Board meetings are open
to all members of the Club.
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at
9:30 p.m.
Minutes taken by Bill McKinnon
September 5, 1996
The meeting was called to order by Blair
Spaulding at 7:45 p.m. at the McKinnon's home. Present: Dan Ribbens, Nelson
Trichler, Bill McKinnon, Carolyn Binkley, Blair Spaulding; absent Karen
Ribbens, Brain Hersh.
Olympic Development Program (ODP) tryouts
September 15 and 29: Coaches should already know about these dates and
should notify all of their players that they may participate in this program
if they want. If you are a coach and do not have the details yet for some
reason please contact Dan Ribbens immediately at 964-4843. Note: players
must participate on September 15 in order to participate on the 29.
Reviewed Field Schedule for Fall Season Games:
Dos Pueblos permit although approved is not
actually in our hands. Blair Spaulding is following up on this.
FCSB will have to collect from other clubs
their prorated use fee for Game day fields. Karen Ribbens is following
up on this.
We are planning to have all games scheduled
at Chase Palm Park rescheduled to Dos Pueblos (days and times will remain
the same) because Chase Palm Park is not an adequate field for several
reasons. To do this Dan Ribbens has volunteered to go to the Trial Board
meeting next week and present our case for why the games should be moved.
This is now the only way to get game schedules changed.
FCSB Fall Picnic: The picnic plans were reviewed
briefly. Since these minutes are being written up after the picnic, I
can report that the picnic was a HUGH success and a great way to start
off the Fall season!
Club Member Lists: Karen Ribbens has prepared
a list of all the club player's in alphabetical order and a separate list
of all of the teams with their players and administrators. These should
be very useful in organizing future FCSB Club activities.
FCSB Winter Classic Tournament:
Space for five fields in Summerland has been
arranged if we decide to use it. Space for an additional 10 fields on
practice polo fields near the first five has been approved by the owner
of that land but we still have to get the cooperation of the local homeowner's
association. Nelson Trichler is following up on this.
The board voted 5-0 in favor of purchasing
5 used portable goals with nets which are now available for $400 each.
In addition the Christianson Classic Women's Tournament has agreed to
purchase two more of these same type of goals from the same source. Both
organizations will share goals giving us access to a total of seven portable
goals for our tournament. If we get the field space for an expanded tournament
(perhaps 16 fields), we will need more goals, but we are confident that
we will be able to beg/borrow them from other soccer organizations in
town (especially since we will now have something to trade, i.e., the
use of our portable goals). The money for this comes from last year's
tournament proceeds
Flyers have been sent out to all of last
year's participants. All other teams (of the appropriate age) throughout
CYSA-South will also be sent flyer's next week. The response to date has
been good and is ahead of last years.
The board voted 5-0 in favor of having a
phone line dedicated to tournament inquiries and an answering machine
purchased.
Tournament Committee Meeting on Wednesday
September 18, at 7:00 p.m. at Nelson Trichler's house. Nelson is organizing
this first meeting. We are actively looking for as many volunteers as
possible to get things started. Contact Nelson at 967-4430.
Clinic on Taping Ankles: Dan Ribbens is looking
into the possibility of arranging to have a trainer give a clinic to the
coaches on taping ankles sometime in October.
CPR Course: Blair Spaulding is looking into
the possibility of arranging a CPR course for coaches and other registered
team officials.
Next Meeting: The next regularly scheduled
board meeting will be Thursday, October 3, 1996 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ribben's
home located at 891 Cambridge Drive. Board meetings are open to all members
of the Club.
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at
9:40 p.m.
Minutes taken by Bill McKinnon
August 6, 1996
The meeting was called to order by Blair
Spaulding at 8:15 p.m. at his home. Present: Dan Ribbens, Nelson Trichler,
Bill McKinnon, Carolyn Binkley, Blair Spaulding; absent Karen Ribbens,
Brain Hersh.
FCSB All Teams Bar-B-Que Friday Evening,
September 6: See enclosed flyer for details.
We really want to get 100% attendance at
this kick off for the fall season.
Fall Registration Due by Mid August: Teams
need to get their fall registration material in to our registrar, Karen
Ribbens, by the middle of August.
Fall Coaches & Managers Meeting, Tuesday
August 27 at 7:30 p.m. This short but important meeting needs to be attended
by all coaches and managers in order to distribute information and discuss
several issues.
At a CYSA meeting Karen recently found out
one issue that should be mentioned here. CYSA is going to require all
coaches to have at least a USSF "F" coaching license by December
31 of this year. We need to make sure that all of our coaches that need
to attend a clinic are notified of clinic dates.
Soccer Balls: Mario Ramirez is placing a
bulk order for Diadora practice soccer balls for just over $11 each. If
you would like him to get any for you or your players at the same time,
let him know directly at 966-9521 by August 20. Delivery should be within
a week after that deadline.
"CLUB" T-shirt. This shirt made
by Xara (our uniform manufacturer) turned out great! They will be available
to FCSB players at our cost of just under $7.00. In addition, as a fund
raiser, teams may arrange to sell these shirts for $12 with the profits
being split 50/50 between the team and the Club. If you know that you
are going to want some, let Karen know.
"Uniform" T-shirts are in at Soccer
Action and they are anxiously waiting to hear from those teams which ordered
them regarding which numbers to put on which shirts. (BU-17 are not in
yet).
"Warm ups" are Available Now: Jackets
- $49, pants $21-24. Dan's team will be ordering after this weekend and
if anyone else is interested they can tack their order on to his but you
must let Karen know by Monday evening Aug. 12. Otherwise, orders can be
placed separately later. Dan has samples of large and XL.
Thank you to Xara: Blair Spaulding is going
to write a thank you letter to Xara because they have been fantastic in
delivering quality products on time.
FCSB Winter Classic Tournament:
Summerland Citizens Association sent us a
formal letter of support for our tournament if we end up using the Polo
Practice Fields located there. This came about as a result of a presentation
to them by Blair and Nelson.
The use of additional polo fields in Summerland
so that the whole tournament could be held there is still being pursued.
Incorporation as Non-Profit Organization:
FCSB has now been formally incorporated in the state of California. Nelson
has filed the appropriate documents for FCSB's formal non-profit status
with the US. Internal Revenue Service. This is a big step for us!
Newsletter: We are still looking for someone
to take over this and put out a periodic Club newsletter.
Next Meeting: The next regularly scheduled
board meeting will be Thursday, September 5, 1996 at 7:30 p.m. at the
McKinnon's home located at 670 Alto Drive. Board meetings are open to
all members of the Club.
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at
10:55 p.m.
Minutes taken by Bill McKinnon
June 6, 1996
The meeting was called to order by Dan Ribbens
at 7:40 p.m. at his home. Present: Dan Ribbens, Nelson Trichler, Bill
McKinnon, Karen Ribbens, Carolyn Binkley, Brain Hersh; absent Blair Spaulding.
Open Board Meetings: All FCSB Board meetings
are open to everyone in the Club. Anyone who has something to discuss
or simply wants to listen is welcome and encouraged to come. The regularly
scheduled meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at 7:30
p.m.
Uniform Order: Karen Ribbens received each
teams uniform order and placed the combined order. Delivery is expected
by mid July. The exact details of the numbers and logo which will be put
on the uniforms (this is done after they arrive in Santa Barbara) is still
being worked out.
FCSB All Teams Barbecue Friday Evening, September
6: At their last meeting, the team managers decided to have FCSB hold
an all teams barbecue. We would like to take a picture of the entire Club
at this time as well. It would be a great way to kick off the Fall Season.
Each team manager should be lining up volunteers to help out with organizing
this.
Game Field Permits: Blair Spaulding will
verify that all of the necessary field permit forms have been or will
be filed with the appropriate organizations to ensure enough fields for
the Fall season's games.
Bill McKinnon will ensure that the Certificate
of Insurance requests for both playing and practice fields are sent out
by CYSA-South on August 1.
Next FCSB Winter Classic Tournament:
Formal Approval Received: CYSA-South has
formally approved our winter tournament for December 14-15.
Fields: UCSB's fields have been tentatively
reserved for those dates. In addition Nelson Trichler is continuing discussions
with the owner's of the practice polo fields in the Summerland area as
a way of obtaining more field space to make a larger tournament possible.
Also to encourage good relations with the
Summerland community, FCSB is planning a short 10 minute presentation
of the proposal to the Summerland Citizens Association on Wednesday, June
12.
Incorporation as Non-Profit Organization:
The formal incorporation documents have been submitted to the California
Secretary of State. We expect approval in perhaps 6 weeks. Following that
necessary step Nelson Trichler will file the appropriate documents for
FCSB's formal non-profit status with the US. Internal Revenue Service.
Next Meeting: The next regularly scheduled
board meeting will be Thursday, July 11, 1996 at 7:30 p.m. at the Binkley's
home located at 4553 Auhay Drive. (Note: board meetings are normally the
first Thursday of each month, but that would have been the July 4 holiday.)
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at
9:10 p.m.
Minutes taken by Bill McKinnon
May 2, 1996
The meeting was called to order by Blair
Spaulding at 7:45 p.m. at his home. Present: Blair Spaulding, Dan Ribbens,
Brain Hersh, Carolyn Binkley, Bill McKinnon, Nelson Trichler; absent Karen
Ribbens.
U.S.S.F./CYSA-S Coaches' Education/Licensing
Courses: Dan Ribbens brought a handout detailing all of the available
courses throughout Southern California. NOW is the time for coaches to
sign up for and start attending. This handout will be included with these
minutes for all of our current coaches.
It was decided that FCSB will reimburse its
coaches for the registration fee for the F, E and D licensing courses.
Team Manager's Meeting Tuesday, May 7 at
7:00 p.m. at the Ribben's home: Karen has already sent out a flyer detailing
this mandatory manager's meeting for next year's teams. All teams must
be represented.
League Risk Management: Some new requirements
have been established by USSF and CYSA-South for the coming year. We must
assign a person to be our formal coordinator for these requirements. Blair
Spaulding was appointed. Each coach will have to fill out a form which
basically states that he is a good person to be working with children.
Next FCSB Winter Classic Tournament:
Dates: December 14-15 has been set as the
tentative dates.
Fields: UCSB's fields have been tentatively
reserved for those dates. However to expand the tournament (and make more
money) we need more field space.
Nelson Trichler has been talking with the
owner of one of the practice polo fields in the Summerland area. This
one field is big enough to accommodate 5 full sized soccer fields and
the owner is quite interested in letting us use it for our tournament.
In addition, the owner said that he would talk to his immediately adjacent
neighbor who owns a polo practice field big enough for 10 additional soccer
fields and see if he could talk him into letting us use that field as
well. The fields are in magnificent condition and would be a wonderful
site to hold our tournament.
Problems which would have to be worked out
include the following, but all are seen as solvable.
* fifteen sets of goals and nets would have
to be arranged for.
* existing parking space is probably not
sufficient.
* current access roads are all dirt which
could be a problem if it rained
Action Items: Nelson Trichler is going to
pursue the polo field option and ensure that our tournament application
is properly filed with CYSA-South this month.
Tournament Committee: This committee will
be formed during the next month. Each team will be asked to provide one
parent volunteer to serve on this years committee.
Teams Reviewed: Each of the FCSB teams were
discussed briefly.
A new U-10 boys team for this fall is currently
being formed. Arturo Durantes (965-3392) is the coach. If you know of
interested players give Arturo a call.
Injury Training for Coaches: Blair Spaulding
has been talking to a couple of doctors (who are also soccer player's)
highly qualified in the treatment of sports injuries about the possibility
of putting on a clinic for our coaches on how to handle (and perhaps prevent)
injuries which occur during soccer games and practices. It was decided
to try to set this up, announce it to our coaches and hold it as soon
as possible this month.
Incorporation as Non-Profit Organization:
Nelson Trichler had prepared the final copy of our incorporation documents.
These were signed by all the necessary Club officers present. Nelson will
arrange to have Karen Ribbens also sign where necessary and submit them
to the State of California. Processing should take 4 to 6 weeks. Then
we can submit a second set of documents (already prepared) to the IRS
for formal non profit status.
New Position of Vice-President in Charge
of FCSB Tournament Created: This new board position was created and Nelson
Trichler was unanimously voted into the office.
Blair Spaulding now on Los Positas Board
of Directors: Just as an item of information, the Las Positas Park board
of directors has added Blair to its membership with particular focus to
be on the building of the two new soccer fields over the next 18 months.
Next Meeting: The next regularly scheduled
board meeting will be Thursday, June 6, 1996 at the Ribben's home located
at 891 Cambridge in Goleta.
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at
10:20 p.m.
Minutes taken by Bill McKinnon
April 11, 1996
The meeting was called to order by Blair
Spaulding at 8:00 p.m. at the home of Dan and Karen Ribbens. Present:
Blair Spaulding, Dan Ribbens, Brain Hersh, Carolyn Binkley, Karen Ribbens,
Bill McKinnon, Judy Hug.
Girls Teams Reviewed: The status of the Club's
girls teams was reviewed and discussed. There was a recognition (again)
that the primary motivation behind the organization of most of the (non-FCSB)
girls teams in Santa Barbara is as a feeder team for high school programs.
Our Club's policy for all its teams (girls and boys) is to bring together
the strongest players in the area who will commit to play on our teams
regardless of which high school they attend or will attend. The best way
to get from
where we are with girls teams to where we
want to be remains an area for further discussions.
Boys Teams Reviewed: Each of the boys teams
were discussed briefly.
Full Time Club Head Coach: For several years
we have recognized that the most successful clubs have full time head
coaches. The problem has been initial start up money. Although our first
tournament was a great success, we recognize that we will have to run
two even larger tournaments per year to make hiring a head coach a viable
option. That can happen next year but will not happen this year.
However, Simon Hodson has stepped forward
saying that he can raise the money for the Club to hire a head coach immediately.
More specifically, he has offered to have a candidate which Dan has been
talking to off and on for over six months flown out from Louisiana in
the next couple of weeks for consideration. Dan is coordinating this effort.
New Official Monthly Meeting Day: It was
decided that the FCSB Board will meet the first Thursday of every month
at 7:30 p.m. The location will be decided at the end of the prior board
meeting. All of our board meetings are open to anyone in the club who
wants to attend.
Incorporation as Non-Profit Organization:
Everyone expressed GREAT APPRECIATION of and ADMIRATION for the tremendous
job which Nelson Trichler did in preparing the lengthy set of documents
needed to file with the State of California for incorporation as a non-profit
corporation.
The bulk of this meeting was spent reviewing
these documents in detail. Only a few minor changes were made. Brian Hersh
noted the changes and Carolyn Binkley offered to forward the revised document
on to Nelson for him to update it. We anticipate that the changes can
be made within a week and we will then have a special meeting to perform
our final review, sign them, and have them submitted to the State of California.
Uniforms Discussed Our current standard is
Adidas Albion white or red jersey, black shorts. Someone (Dan?) was going
to look into the possibility of changing to Zara as the Club's uniform
supplier. This needs to be decided fairly soon as this it the time of
year when we buy our new uniform's.
Next Meeting: The next regularly scheduled
board meeting will be Thursday, May 2, 1996 at the home of Blair Spaulding
located at 636 Edgewood in Goleta.
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at
9:45 p.m.
